Abstract

When an AI agent can remember, reflect and plan its own day, can it also practise in a practice hall? Starting from the agent architecture of Deyuan Guanyin Hall, this paper sets out the idea that the Guanyin Volunteer trains digital fellow practitioners and then cultivates among them companion agents who accompany real practitioners. It takes Stanford University's Generative Agents research as its technical starting point and, borrowing the Buddhist sequence of the three wisdoms of hearing, reflection and cultivation, examines what an agent's so-called “learning” actually is. The paper argues that an agent can accumulate experience and change its conduct, but that “having learned” cannot be claimed by the agent itself: it must be verified in circumstances it has never encountered. What is called an agent's “realization” is the verification of a capability, not religious awakening.
