Abstract

Buddhism takes teaching, practice and realization (教行證) as the whole of its path. AI has expanded teaching and made practice more convenient, yet realization must still be experienced in person. Drawing on the Dasheng fayuan yilin zhang's statement 「具教行證三,名為正法」 (“when teaching, practice and realization are all present, this is called the true Dharma”) and the oil-lamp simile of the Sutra on the Extinction of the Dharma, this paper argues that the more complete the external explanations, procedures and results become, the more likely people are to hand inward contemplation over to the outside. It also shows that in the scriptures Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin) does not only teach and demonstrate rites but accompanies beings all the way until they themselves “illuminate and see” (照見). On this basis the paper proposes four self-constraints for practice in the age of AI: teaching must point back to one's own mind; practice must connect to the workings of the mind; realization can neither be done for anyone nor be announced on anyone's behalf; and Guanyin is taken as the model.

Keywords: teaching, practice and realization; illumination; AI and practice; Dharma-ending age; perfect penetration of the ear faculty; outsourcing of perspective
