Abstract

This paper explains the scriptural grounds for the sub-categories, movement and sound of the five kinds of light lamps at Deyuan Guanyin Hall (Universal Gate lamps, blessing lamps, remembrance lamps, pet lamps and lamps for all beings). Each sub-category draws only on passages in the Universal Gate chapter and the Thousand-Hands Sūtra in which Guanyin saves beings and fulfils their wishes: Universal Gate lamps are divided into twelve moods according to the Universal Gate chapter, and each of the other four kinds into five to twelve sub-categories. The movement of the lamps is imagery designed by this site from the scriptural passages, not the content of the scriptures themselves. The paper does not quote 「還著於本人」 (“it returns upon the person himself”), does not speak of blessing, miraculous efficacy or empowerment, and sets no category for seeking wealth among the blessing lamps. All quotations have been checked character by character against CBETA.

Keywords: light lamps; Universal Gate chapter; Thousand-Hands Sūtra; blessing; remembrance; digital practice hall
