Abstract
This paper sets out the liturgy and interface specification for ceremonies in the Universal Gate Practice Hall. The rite is based on the Universal Gate chapter's 「受持名號、恭敬禮拜、一心供養」 (“upholding the name, reverently prostrating, single-mindedly making offerings”); the step of invitation follows the order of the ten methods in Zhili's Qianshouyan dabeixinzhou xingfa of the Song dynasty, and the dedication verse comes from the Parable of the Phantom City chapter. The ceremony has nine steps: making a sincere vow, offering, invitation, prostration, sutra recitation, calling the name, Dharma offering, prayer and dedication. In each step the officiant's words introduce the scriptural basis and participants respond with buttons. The paper states plainly that the arrangement of steps, their durations and the interface were devised by Deyuan Academy on scriptural grounds and are not an ancient institution, and it sets four principles: the Guanyin Volunteer serves as officiant, not as the presiding master; no merit beyond what the scriptures state is claimed; every personal ceremony must begin with the person's own vow; and prostration is the participant's own bodily act.
