Abstract

This paper argues for the grounds on which a digital practice hall can stand. According to the Vimalakīrti Sūtra, 「直心是道場」 (“the straightforward mind is the place of practice”): a practice hall is established by the activity of the mind, not by a location. According to the boundary-setting of the Thousand-Hands Sūtra, 「以想到處為界」 (“the boundary is wherever the mind reaches”): a ritual boundary need not follow physical markers. According to the Universal Gate chapter, when one calls the name single-mindedly, Guanyin at once perceives the voice, and the response likewise does not depend on place. The merchant-leader passage of the chapter, 「其中一人作是唱言」 (“one among them called out”), establishes the position of the one who leads the chant: leading others in calling the name without standing in for each person's single-mindedness. On this basis the hall sets its rule: every rite performed for an individual must begin with that person's own vow; communal practices and fixed sessions scheduled by the hall proceed when their time comes. It also establishes the four gates of the Universal Gate Practice Hall: individual invitation, communal recitation, entrusted recitation and fixed sessions.

Keywords: Universal Gate Practice Hall; the straightforward mind is the place of practice; the one who leads the chant; making a vow; communal practice
